It’s no surprise that “The Beta Test” sees the ontological danger it poses to its protagonist as a potential disguised as a threat. The guy has built everything that can amplify that statement for him after decades of crying “it doesn’t have to be this way!” into the void. Physical infidelity is used as a Trojan horse in this film to emphasize the producers’ concern with opposing the system and refusing to let others determine his value.
The only other option is Cummings himself, whose erratic adherence to the plot of his picture is offset by the clinical anguish of his depiction of Jordan (McCabe is also superb as Jordan’s best friend and limited sidekick PJ). Cummings’ head acting harkens back to a younger Jim Carrey’s unpredictability, notably in the scene in “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” when he’s delivering himself from an artificial rhino’s ass. Each second of “The Beta Test,” Jordan extends the limits of his own skin in a same rhythm, as if he were trapped within his own body and attempting to chew his way out.
Cummings’ presentation simply adds an optimal test of continuity to a film that hardly has a grip on its own finished and semi-finished collusion, and frequently feels like an augmentation of the psychotic break that its lead character may be experiencing — a film that supports Jordan’s inability to understand whether it must be giggling, weeping, or seeking the sidewalls of reality on its own, and could have coped effectively. “I simply want to look fashionable, upbeat, and successful, but I’m so corny!” Jordan screams as he gets closer to the core of his warped persona.
